My relationship with Christ was defined by multiple moments where I realized the power, love, and grace of Christ was real and something that I could not hide from anymore. The first realization of Christ’s love came when I was in college where my roommates and I would wake up early in the morning to simply pray! No matter how early one of us had class, we would all wake up and pray together. I started to notice how amazing the days were that I prayed because I was constantly pointed toward Christ simply because I began my day in service to him. However being a bull headed male I soon fell back to my old ways of living for MY glory.
Later I would meet the woman of my dreams in Sammie. I knew this was the girl that I was going to marry, but I also figured that married life would be great because I could have her, but continue to live my life. After a crappy first 6 months of marriage I started to realize that all this was because I was living for me, or for Sammie instead of living for the Glory of GOD! Sammie and I would join a small group where we continued to grow until I fully gave my life to Christ when I was baptized about 3 years ago at Harvest. I will never forget how powerful God felt in that moment and how much joy I had. From that point on there was no turning back and God has been faithful in my marriage, to me as a father, and in my career. Praise God!!!
When my wife Sammie and I were engaged we were going to the the church where she was already attending with her family in Hudsonville. We really enjoyed the church and being with her family, but something felt like it was missing. My good friend Kris Shear had just starting singing with a worship band at a growing church out of the Trillium Center in Spring Lake called Harvest. He said “Craig you have to come watch me” because I had recently moved to the area. I can remember sitting at the service just feeling like God was calling me to not only come to Harvest, but lead my future wife there as well. I immediately called Sammie after the service and said “I think I found our new church”. We have been here ever since, in fact both of our families now attend Harvest and we continue to see God working in their lives as well.
Coming to Harvest as a member of the pastoral staff is a whole different story! While I was teaching at Reeths-Puffer High School, my wife Sammie and I had been faithfully serving and attending Harvest for over 5 years. Because of the love and grace that God has showed us in our marriage through every trial we continued to grow stronger, and continued to keep our eyes pointed Vertical toward the Lord. The whole time God was working on our hearts until we were approached by the pastoral staff here at Harvest about a possibility of being able to serve my Lord and Savior FULL TIME! From there the decision was easy . . . when you feel the Lord is calling you, YOU FOLLOW!
Being that I am the newbie on staff I have been handed some amazing responsibility and ability to work on the front lines. I am able to make calls to the first time visitors that visit Harvest. I am also able to talk with people that have recently strayed away from the church in an effort to keep their eyes focused on the Lord. I am working in pre-marriage counseling creating the building blocks that God calls upon to build a solid foundation for marriage. I am also able to visit with those who are struggling with health and have the opportunity to show them God’s love, listen to them, and pray with them. I am also able to be in the counseling room where you can see first hand how BIG God is and watch him change the lives and the hearts of the broken into obedient servants for the Lord. I LOVE the front lines and the relationships it allows me to build with the amazing people (and their stories) that walk through the doors here at Harvest in obedience to the Lord.
I LOVE JESUS! There is no greater calling than being able to fight on the front lines for our Lord and Savior and boldly proclaim the word of Christ.
As a member I have been at Harvest since 2011. Sammie and I have been Small Group Leaders since 2015 and I have been a Pastor on staff since October of 2016.
I graduated from Rockford High School in 2005 where I then began attending Western Michigan University (Go Broncos!). Being a Momma’s boy I was only there for a semester before I wanted to leave and had the opportunity to play tennis and GRCC (Grand Rapids Community College) while being closer to home. After my time there I graduated from GVSU in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education.
The good news is that none of that matters now because I am working for the Lord! Now I am constantly being challenged and learning from the other Pastors on staff and from God’s Word
After graduating from GVSU in 2010 I was blessed to find work immediately at Reeths-Puffer High School where I worked for 6 ½ years teaching World History to 9th graders. I was also the Boys Varsity Tennis Coach.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever
Sammie Gurr (I married up)
Natalie Gurr who is 4 and pictured above. Thank the Lord in all his Grace that he would allow my little girl to look like my wife instead of me
I am a huge fan of the Detroit Lions, Pistons, and Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!).
I also love simply hanging out with my family whether it is going to Grand Haven or going to the neighborhood pool. We also love spending time with other families and the community here at Harvest.
